Gestern drehten Swede und ich die gewohnte Runde – einmal zum Hügel hinauf, einmal um den Felsen herum, und einmal wieder zurück. Jedoch kamen wir nur bis zum Felsen, denn dort oben gewahrten wir plötzlich etwas Seltsames. Es mochte sich gut versteckt haben und es mochte von Ferne für ein Trugbild gehalten werden, trotzdem war da etwas im blattlosen Geäst auszumachen. Ja da saß etwas im Baum.
Wir nahten uns mit dem festen Schritt eines Wackelpuddings bis wenige Schritte ans Gehölz heran. Tatsächlich saß da ein kleiner Leopard - wenn ich Leopard sage, dann meine ich eigentlich eine Leopardin - auf dem kargen Gestrüpp, das sich stolz Bäumchen nennt. Als wir am Fuße standen, sprang sie herab, setzte sich zu uns.
Und anstatt unsere Ländereien abzugehen und Grenzen zu erneuern, plauderten wir mit der Leopardin. Da war die Rede von langen Wanderungen, von Plündereien im Hühnerstall, von Diskussionen mit Nachbars Hunden; zum guten Schluss liefen wir – Swede und Molly und ich – zu dritt den Rest des Weges und wärmten uns zu Hause auf.

Yesterday Swede and I did our usual trip - once up the hill, around the rock, and back again. However, we only got as far as the rock, because up there we noticed something strange. It might have hidden itself well and from a distance it might be mistaken for a mirage, but there was something in the leafless branches. No doubt about it.
We approached the tree just a few steps with the firm gait of a jello. In fact there was a little leopard - when I say leopard, I actually mean a leopardess - sat on the barren undergrowth that proudly calls itself sapling. When we stood at the foot of the trunk, she jumped down and sat with us.
And instead of walking around our lands and renewing borders, we chatted with the leopardess. There was talk of long walks, of looting in the chicken coop, of discussions with neighbors' dogs; in the end, the three of us - Swede and Molly and I - walked the rest of the way and warmed up at home.
