Ist das zu glauben – da liege ich mit den Kindern im Gras und spiele Verstecken, und plötzlich falle ich einem sonderbaren Gemurmel anheim, das – nicht weit von mir – eine große Entdeckung verriet. Wie sich zeigte, standen die Kleinen vor einem Pilz und staunten. Denn solche Pilze sahen sie nie zuvor in freier Wildbahn, mehr noch, sie hielten es bis heute für unmöglich, einen solchen Pilz jemals zu finden, ist es doch einer jener Pilze, die nur in Computerspielen vorkommen. Aber so wahr sie dort standen, so wahrhaftig stand da ein Pilz, wie ihn Super Mario nur zu gerne verspeist.
Das wollten die Kinder auch: Sie wollten den Pilz verspeisen. Alles, was man tun musste, um einen solchen Pilz zu verzehren war draufzuspringen. Wenn man es richtig tat, ertönte ein Geräusch und der Pilz verschwände. Aber nicht bloß das – der Pilzesser wüchse zur zweifachen Größe heran.

Can you believe it? I’m lying in the grass with the cubbies, playing hide and seek, and suddenly I hear a strange murmuring that - not far from me - revealed a great discovery. They had never seen such mushrooms in the wild before, and even more, they thought it was impossible to ever find such a mushroom, as it is one of those mushrooms only appear in computer games. But as sure as they were standing there, there was a mushroom there, the kind that Super Mario loves to eat.
That’s what the children wanted too: they wanted to eat that mushroom. All you had to do was to jump on it. If you did it right, you would hear a distinct sound and the mushroom would disappear. But not only that - the mushroom eater would grow to twice its size.
