Due to the #InternationalCheetahDay let's have some #cheetah facts. Many of you know #cheetahs from documentaries, know about light speed and their habitats and behaviour and vast beauty. So I tried to pick out a few facts that you might not already know. These and way more about cheetahs you can find in this incredible book "Cheetahs: Biology and Conservation". So here away go with the facts #1 to #5:1⃣ Did you know that cheetahs can move their claws, though it's said cheetahs can't and their claws would always stick out? Actually, they can retract their claws, but the sheaths have receded so far that they are never appearing completely hidden.However, the often quoted term "retractable claws" isn't correct at all. The claws are automatically held back by an elastic band, so the claws have to be stretched out. More precisely, they should be called "extendable claws".2⃣ Did you know that the black spots in the cheetah's fur coat appear slightly raised respectively the dark fur seems little longer due to an optical effect?3⃣ Did you know that despite their comparatively small skull, cheetahs have a similar brain volume to other cats? So the cheetah's head is another example of pure efficiency.4⃣ Did you know that 95% of all female cheetahs could be found in the wild are either pregnant or raise cubs at the time of their sighting? Only a few are independent, probably waiting for a male to come.5⃣ Everyone knows that cheetahs are the fastest land creatures. But did you know that cheetahs lose so much energy on a hunt that four or five failed attempts might cause them starve?
